Meet the Team – James Pullein

How did you join HGH?

I joined HGH straight from York College at age 17. I’d done work experience when I was 15 and knew I wanted to be an accountant. I applied to several firms around York and chose HGH to start my career and I’ve been here 19 years now.

What’s your day-to-day role?

A bit of everything!

I look after a portfolio of clients and work with them on their accounts and tax affairs, I also like to speak with clients about the financial systems they have in place and how we introduce cloud software to ensure they get more time to spend on their business.

The other part of my role is focusing on HGH and how we continue to adapt with how the industry is changing and ensuring we offer the best possible service to our clients.

What do you enjoy doing when not at work?

Outside of work I can often be found on the golf course with my family or watching one of the many sports teams I follow! I also enjoy watching the local teams too.

I do enjoy reading when I get chance and am always on the lookout for a good series to read.

What advice would you give somebody who wants to start their career in accountancy?

Having joined straight from completing my A Levels, I would recommend looking at the apprentice route. Accountancy is not a career you need to go to university for and I found that getting hands-on experience from day one and learning on the job is a great way to get started.

How has the firm changed over the years?

Lots!

When I joined, the records were physical paper records and our processes were manual, including paper analysis and handwritten queries. It’s hard to believe how different it was compared to how software and IT have changed the industry.

The ability to have up-to-date information and records allows us to have meaningful discussions on how their business is performing.

What song gets you on the dance floor?

Erasure – a little respect.

What’s on your bucket list?

To go to Australia and watch the ashes, it always coincides with our busier period so it will take a bit of planning.

What books do you like to read?

I tend to read a lot of sci-fi and my favourite author is Marko Kloos, the current book im reading is a Harry Bosch book.

What do you enjoy about your job?

That every day is different, I get a mix of being able to work on the business and helping HGH grow but also having relationships with the clients to help them improve their business too.

Sum up HGH in 3 words.

Supportive, caring, and dedicated.
