Get to know Nick Lawson, our HGH Wealth Management Director, who has been working in our York office for almost 15 years. Read below to find out about how he started his career and what his top financial tip would be.

When did you join HGH?

I joined HGH in October 2011, so I’ve been working here for nearly 15 years!

How did you start your career?

I graduated in 2000 and applied for a range of graduate roles before securing a position as an Independent Financial Adviser in Bath, where I began my career 25 years ago.

What was your first job?

My first job at the age of 15 was fruit picking at the local garden centre.

What do you enjoy doing when not at work?

I have a young family, so a lot of my time is spent with them, often in the role of taxi driver!

I also enjoy travelling and have a strong interest in history. More recently, I think I might finally be growing up as I’ve started to take an interest in gardening.

Where is the best place you have ever visited & why?

Recently, the most memorable trip was to Egypt with my family, where we explored the monuments, pyramids, tombs, and the Valley of the Kings. It was incredible.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I really enjoy working with the people, both my colleagues and team at HGH, and most importantly, my clients. I love getting to know them, building strong relationships, and being able to help. It is also rewarding to see the results of our advice in action and to watch clients enjoy life as a result.

Where did you grow up and go to study?

I grew up in York in a village called Poppleton and I went to University in Lancaster.

What is one top financial tip you would give to a stranger?

My advice would be that if you are working and fortunate enough to receive a pay rise, for example 5%, keep half of it for yourself and put the other half into your pension. Get into the habit of doing this, and you will be amazed at how much your pension can grow over time.

Have you got any holidays booked for 2025?

We are heading to Turkey to visit family in Istanbul and explore some temples, but I’m especially looking forward to spending eight days relaxing on the beach.
